WorkLifeWell’s Stress Less Academy is a space for professionals who are committed to improving health and wellbeing practices.
We hosted the first in a series of exclusive masterclasses, strictly limited to 10 HR and wellness professionals, who are devoted to evolving their wellness culture and becoming more caring employers.
Our Stress-Less masterclass gathered together leading law firms, Macfarlanes, Clyde&Co, Fladgate, Howard Kennedy, Mishcon de Reya, Ince&Co, Cleary Gottlieb and Marriott Harrison to discuss the impact that life in COVID-19 lockdown is having on staff health and wellbeing.
Ordinarily, these top law firms compete with one another but, as with the changes we are seeing in society, the global pandemic is bringing people closer together, creating a more caring culture and being more open about mental health. Despite the competition, there was a lot of common ground when it came to employee wellbeing.
Here are just a few highlights:
#1 We’ve seen a big increase in colleagues caring and looking after each other. There’s a far greater awareness and focus on health and wellness. Making sure that managers and partners are trained in all areas of mental health is essential.
#2 We’re seeing a new side to colleagues, not just the professional. We now see their home and pets on video meetings. We’ve become less formal.
#3 The transition back into the office will be challenging. We need to carefully plan this, as it could require rotating staff and working rotas to maintain social distance.
#4 How do we support staff with anxiety who may be afraid of commuting on the train and being in close contact in a busy office?
#5 Now more than ever we need leaders to demonstrate a commitment to caring and ensuring that there are processes to support and look after colleagues.
“We’ve got a golden opportunity to start with a clean slate and redefine our company culture.

The global pandemic is the biggest crisis that we have witnessed in a lifetime. In no way are belittling the pain and suffering caused; there have however been some positives.
It’s sped up openness and change. Law firms have been talking about changing their culture for years. The leading law HR professionals that took part in the Stress-Less Masterclass didn’t want to return to the old culture and ways of working. They all wanted to maintain momentum and keep mental health and wellness at the forefront.
